The fun of watching a short like this is that it will sneak up on you. The joy of this film is the discovery. It’s 13 minutes long, but it’s well earned. Watch before you read.
The joy of surreal satirical shorts is that the low risk of the short format gives the filmmakers free reign to run with their ideas. Interesting Ball satirizes the multi-story genre, specifically Crash, by taking a bunch of disparate stories and linking them with a shallow voice over. The fun of Interesting Ball is the various stories it goes through. One story is a standard old hat joke taken to its Nth degree, there’s a Quentin Dupieux-style domestic drama, and a co-option of an idea developed from a Clive Barker short story. Interesting Ball challenges the tropes we’re used to seeing, but without any moralizing. It’s just out to show us a good time.
