After last week’s no-show, we’re back to normal this week. We get two Criterions today, the long-awaited upgrade of The Exterminating Angel and the debut of Laurie Anderson into the Collection, Heart of a Dog (the supplements apparently contain restored footage of Anderson’s Home of the Brave, so it may not be her last title to be released by them), and one ex-Criterion, with the new-and-improved 4K restoration of Howards End (containing the features from Criterion’s OOP release, so it’s entirely worthless now). We also get restorations of the first Phantasm (coinciding with the release of the newest entry in the series) and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. And in addition to Blu-Rays of Porky’s sequels and Geoff Murphy’s sci-fi classic The Quiet Earth, we get the (exceptionally poorly-timed) American debut of Bernardo Bertolucci’s Luna (with more Vittorio Storaro magic presented in glorious HD). As for new titles, Warner Bros. easily leads the pack with the release of the black-and-white version of Mad Max: Fury Road, separate and in a new box set with the rest of the series’s films. Meanwhile, Universal releases two stinkers and a winner, the latter being Mike Birbiglia’s Don’t Think Twice and the former being Jason Bourne and The Secret Life of Pets (if the latter is as bad as Illumination/Universal’s second film this year, Sing, hoo boy, definitely give it a pass).
