New on DVD and Blu-Ray

There’s plenty of good stuff coming out this week, but alas, the biggie may very well be out-of-reach if you’re not a Brit. That would be BFI’s new restoration of Abel Gance’s Napoleon, which presents the film in a more complete fashion than it’s ever been shown (this version runs five-and-a-half hours) and contains some extensive supplemental material. After that, most of this week’s offerings look like small potatoes in comparison, although maybe not Criterion’s rescuing of Marlon Brando’s only directorial effort One-Eyed Jacks, with a 4K restoration supervised in part by Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation (Scorsese also contributes an interview to the disc). Their 4K restoration and release of Noah Baumbach’s The Squid and the Whale is probably objectively less important than the release of a classic that’s never seen the light on home video, but it’s a great movie that’s well-deserving of a better home video release. They’re not the only boutique labels doing good work this week, too. Shout Factory gives us new restorations and special editions of David Cronenberg’s Rabid and William Friedkin’s To Live and Die in L.A. (which Arrow Video is releasing in the UK this same week), while Arrow gives C.H.U.D. the red-carpet treatment Criterion so cruelly joked about giving it (meanwhile, Lionsgate trots out its inferior sequel this week as well, in addition to an actually good horror sequel, Return of the Living Dead 3) and the Warner Archive Collection gives former Dissolve Movie of the Week It’s Always Fair Weather a much-deserved Blu-Ray release. As for new releases, you’ve got the apparently excellent Hell or High Water and Kubo and the Two Strings, a trio of films that left my mind immediately after I typed their titles in War Dogs, Hands of Stone, and Mechanic: Resurrection, and the apparent abomination unto God Yoga Hosers.
