New on DVD and Blu-Ray

We’ve got ourselves something of an embarrassment of riches this week. Not in terms of new releases; there, all you really have to look forward (and not in the sense of “I’m probably going to hate-watch this and hate myself immediately afterwards”) to is the Mike D’Angelo-approved sleeper Tu dors Nicole. But in terms of catalog titles, boy oh boy, we got some winners here. Obviously, there’s the Criterion of David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, anticipated for many years and finally here. There’s the long-awaited Blu-Ray debut of Saul Bass’s lone feature film Phase IV, and easily one of the two greatest ant movies out there, next to another title getting a Blu-Ray release this week, Them!. There’s new 4K restoration of Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element and Leon: The Professional, King Wu’s Dragon Inn, and My Fair Lady, yet another double-dip of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, a collection of two very, very loose giallo Edgar Allan Poe adaptations from Arrow Video (including one with the utterly fantastic title Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key), and former Forgotbuster The End. But even bigger than any of those is Scream Factory’s absurdly loaded release of Army of Darkness. Yes, you’ve probably rebought Army of Darkness too many times to count, but you can chuck those other discs out, because this not only has all the features from all the releases (including a typically wonderful audio commentary with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell on the director’s cut) and the theatrical and director’s cuts, it also has the lesser-seen international cut (8 minutes longer than the U.S. cut) and the television edit of the film. Did I mention that the international cut got a brand-spanking-new 4K restoration, with as much of that restoration as possible appearing in the theatrical cut? And that there are new features?
