New on DVD and Blu-Ray

And after so many great weeks for home video releases, the hangover finally begins. This week is a rather uninspiring one in all regards, starting with new titles, which the gamut from reportedly quite solid (Star Trek Beyond) to pretty good (My Blind Brother) to ones I’ve already forgotten about, with two absolute disasters thrown in; Nine Lives and Sea of Trees, the latter I can only recommend to Gus Van Sant fans who’ve already suffered through Restless and can’t imagine him making something worse than that (I was in your shoes, and I was wrong in a big way). Catalog titles may honestly be a little worse, with the one worthwhile widely-available one being Kino’s release of the classic noir I Wake Up Screaming. Other titles are sadly dumped onto Sony’s new BD-R label, including Not Another Teen Movie and John Ford’s Gideon of Scotland Yard (two films very much equal in power, of course). Arrow is the only one to save the day, with its wonderful release of Dekalog, which makes up for its absences in comparison to Criterion’s edition (namely, A Short Film About Love and Killing) by painting an excellent portrait of Krzysztof Kieślowski as a TV director.
