After several amazing weeks, we finally get one that’s a little less wallet-busting. Part of that is due to the slate being dominated by new release titles, some worthwhile (Men & Chicken and Hunt for the Wilderpeople), some very much not (Skiptrace and Mr. Church), and some kinda in the middle (Lights Out, Captain Fantastic, and Nerve). And Criterion only has one title out this week, although that it’s a rescue of the long-undiscovered Spanish dark comedy The Executioner should soothe any disappointment (not to mention the release’s utterly amazing cover art). But the smaller slate still contains more than a few must-buys, big amongst them Scream Factory’s release of The Exorcist III, containing both the original film (restored and remastered compared to Warner Bros.’s bare-bones Blu-Ray of it) and a reconstructed version of William Peter Blatty’s original vision for the film (entitled Legion) that was butchered by the studio. Olive Films also gives John Ford’s The Quiet Man a proper encode and tons of special features as part of its Signature Series, StudioCanal makes its 4K restoration of Nicolas Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth available to Brits and people with region-free capacities, new British label Indicator makes Sony’s 4K restoration of Brian De Palma’s Body Double available to everyone, region be damned, for a not-insane price in an edition that may not even sell out two hours after its release date, Arrow goes all out on the work of the late, great horror schlockmeister Herschell Gordon Lewis (in a box set roughly the size of a cereal box, and designed like one too), and Universal Music gives Martin Scorsese’s Bob Dylan doc No Direction Home a very timely Blu-Ray release. And there’s also Hobgoblins, in case you feel the need to do a lot of coke and vote for Ronald Reagan.
