New on DVD and Blu-Ray

This week’s huge title is also one that I have not yet seen, that being Captain America: Civil War. It was just never that an enticing a prospect for me, and nothing I’ve read about it really grabbed me by the shoulders and said I had to go (well, maybe when I heard about Dean Pelton’s cameo, but that’s it). But this week, we have some new releases that were immediately enticing to me, thankfully. One was Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow’s documentary De Palma, in which Brian De Palma sits down and chats about his career for 90 minutes in between copious film clips. A24 saw fit to not have it play anywhere near me, so home video is where I’ll first be able to see it, and I very much look forward to doing so, especially opposite Scream Factory’s special edition of De Palma’s Raising Cain, including a fan-edit-turned-official director’s cut of how the film was originally structured. I did get the opportunity to see Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, which was very, very funny indeed, and which I would happily see again. And I’d happily give my money over to Arrow for their special edition of Joe Dante’s Matinee (which includes all the footage shot for the film-within-the-film Mant!), to Synapse Films for their restoration of Dario Argento’s Tenebrae, and to Criterion for their release of Kenji Mizoguchi’s The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum. I’d make note of Twilight Time releasing 9 to 5 and Remo Williams in that sentence, but I thankfully don’t have to give them money, happily or not, now that Arrow has all of Woody Allen’s MGM-owned films.
