A very fun week, Kino alone giving us five different “evil animals/insects/amphibian” movies on Blu-Ray plus 4Ks for Last Year at Marienbad and Jeans -Claude Van Damme and -Luc Godard. There’s also what have to be the very bleakest Claire Denis movie, the worst Garfield movie in a crowded field, and the second-best use of M. Night Shyamalan nepotism this year. Best of all, there’s the long-awaited (if pretty bare-bones) Criterion reissue of Albert Brooks’ Real Life, his scathing comedy about the perils of documenting reality that’s certainly not getting less relevant as the years go on. I don’t know that there’s similar excitement for Criterion’s 4K of Brooks’ Mother, his genial comedy with Debbie Reynolds that wouldn’t place better than fifth in almost anyone’s Brooks ranking, but at least it’s not Tiny Furniture The Shape of Water!
