Criterion compiles three different cuts of Sam Peckinpah’s Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, but what I want to talk about is the cheapo Mill Creek double-feature Blu-Ray. Not Evening, which sounds like a nadir of star-studded, Oscar-grubbing weepies, but Once Around, the first American film by future auteur of star-studded, Oscar-grubbing weepies Lasse Hallstrom. What seems to be another rom-com about a big Italian family turns out to be a sour and uncomfortable dramedy about having to sacrifice for someone else’s happiness even when you know that you’re the one in the right. Sometimes your daughter or sister will find herself hopelessly in love with a hopelessly embarrassing Richard Dreyfuss type (or, worst case scenario, Richard Dreyfuss himself), and all you can do is try to see his positives and secretly wait for him to die.
