New on DVD and Blu-Ray

This week marks the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is either the worst thing either polio or an unsung masterpiece, depending on who you ask. If you ask me, you won’t get a response due to my not seeing it, but if/when I do see it, I’ll probably respond somewhere between those two poles. Now that that’s out of the way, we can get to the good stuff, like Criterion’s three releases, which continue their relationship with Alain Resnais (rereleasing his haunting documentary short Night and Fog and releasing his Muriel) and establish a new one with King Hu (bringing the restoration of A Touch of Zen to American home video). There’s also Arrow Academy releasing two standalone discs from its massive UK Fassbinder set (none of the films included on them having U.S. Blu-Rays yet), Kino continuing its devotion to Richard Lester by bringing us his 1979 film Cuba (his last film shot by the great David Watkin), Fox releasing the Julius Kassendorf-approved Demolition, and, best of all, Sony bringing us the chance to watch Michael Shannon play Elvis in the comfort of our own homes.
