A jam-packed week, highlighted by Arrow’s comprehensive box set of the work of director Lukas Moodysson, finally presenting his Fucking Åmål in something better than potato quality and making his notoriously depressing Lilya 4-Ever available on U.S. home video for the first time. In other welcome firsts, we’re finally getting high-def releases of Peter Weir’s Gallipoli and Stanley Tucci/Campbell Scott’s Big Night, as well as 4Ks of The Italian Job (the first one) and Dawn of the Dead (the second one). But it’s not all Blu-Ray debuts, with The Lady From Shanghai now getting its third Blu-Ray release from the exact same restoration.
In new releases, we have a title that was a new release four months ago, David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future, getting a delayed 4K disc. To repeat, it’s a great movie and Lea Seydoux is one of the very best, most committed actors we’ve got. By all accounts you can see more evidence of that in Seydoux’s latest film, Mia Hansen-Love’s One Fine Morning, whose American release Criterion is cashing in on with their Blu-Ray of Hansen-Love’s Bergman Island (or maybe they see a new Shyamalan getting released and want to remind people of that other movie with Vicky Krieps on the beach). we have Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All, a curious midpoint between his previous two movies, where a languid, wide-open romance is sliced into with bursts of really bleak horror. I think it works better in the Suspiria zone than it does with Timmy (though Taylor Russell is a great, unaffected lead), but I imagine others will prefer the love story because it doesn’t involve Mark Rylance diving headfirst into self-parody as his most doddering, eccentric old man to date. I think it works and Rylance gets to be genuinely scary, but also I have a very high tolerance for him doing silly bullshit.
