Now this is more like it. Finally, we have a week where the new and catalog titles are full of winners after several lackluster weeks on both fronts. The new titles include my absolute favorite film of last year, Anomalisa, and this year’s utterly delightful and surprisingly weighty Hail, Caesar!, plus the acclaimed Disney film Zootopia, the well-received 99 Homes, an extended cut (of course) of The Martian, and plenty of new titles for 4K early adapters to use to show off their TVs. And you can see those lovable lads from Liverpool put on a great show with the latest U2 concert film. But in case you just want to buy some crap, there’s Wim Wenders’ latest embarrassment Every Thing Will Be Fine, some Max Landis nonsense, and Michael Bay’s moderately-less-jingoistic-than-expected 13 Hours. Moving into catalog titles, Criterion finally moves into releasing earlyish Michelangelo Antonioni with Le Amiche, Mill Creek puts out the one film written by Dr. Seuss, The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T, Warner Bros. puts out a lot of great stuff, including two great John Ford-John Wayne collaborations and Blake Edwards’ Victor/Victoria, and Paramount satisfies pretty much any Star Trek fan’s desires with their release of Wrath of Khan‘s director’s cut and the complete series of The Next Generation.
