To the extent that any home video release can be a lightning-rod for controversy, this week has one. The World of Wong Kar Wai Criterion boxset is an obvious must-buy in theory but far more complex in practice, and Film Twitter has been rehashing the same arguments about it for almost half a year now. Most of the movies in the box set have dramatically altered color timing, but the correctness or not of these new colors is being judged against other home video releases, which are just as likely to have gotten it wrong in the first place, especially when the past releases of some of these movies have shown no consistency in color at all (Christopher Doyle said that no DVD of Days of Being Wild replicated how green he shot it as, and this new transfer is a lot greener than past ones, so…). Of course, the wild decision to reframe Fallen Angels into a completely different aspect ratio could suggest that Wong Kar Wai has gone mad with power and just done whatever the fuck he wanted with these movies. I dunno. All I do know is that 2046 is the best movie in this set and it doesn’t appear to have been fucked with, so I’ll probably buy it eventually just for that.
