This week is a bit light in terms of quantity… and it’s also a bit light in terms of quality. But there’s, as always, some good stuff to be had. You can enjoy Justin Kurzel’s adaptation of Macbeth, brought to life by Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and the DoP of #TrueDetectiveSeason1, on home video, alongside the all-unsubtitled sign language The Tribe, the genuine one-take film Victoria, Guy Maddin’s wonderful The Forbidden Room, Ron Howard’s future cinematographers entry (it was shot by Anthony Dod Mantle, soon of Snowden and *shudders* Angelina Jolie’s next movie) In the Heart of the Sea, and Zhang Yimou’s latest, reuniting him with Gong Li. As for catalog titles, this week has you covered for wonderful 80s/90s trash, including Xanadu, two Species sequels, and Tim Robbins’ finest hour Howard the Duck. If you want something a little more, you know, good, there’s Jacques Rivette’s posthumous introduction into the Criterion Collection, Paris Belongs to Us, plus two Agnes Varda films from some label called Cinelicious. And you can enjoy Philip Seymour Hoffman’s funniest performance in glorious HD with Universal’s release of Along Came Polly. Just skip the parts that he and Alec Baldwin aren’t in, and you should love it.
