New on DVD and Blu-Ray

If you don’t have a 4K Blu-Ray player, then I’m sad to say that many of this week’s home video releases will be unavailable to you. It seems that the studios are getting busy making the way-early adapter double-dip, whether it’s for the insane eye-candy of Mad Max: Fury Road, the awful beauty of Sicario, or many films whose value as demo-material for home theaters would be diminished by having to explain why on earth the owner is in possession of these movies in the first place. Other than that, we have a wave of Oscar contenders hitting home video, the big one being Best Actress-winner Room, followed by the apparently (I still haven’t seen it) excellent Creed and the apparently pits of Hell-worthy torture device (…so I’ve heard) The Danish Girl. Other than those, you can also see the acclaimed indie character study James White, Jafar Panahi’s latest fuck-you to his government Taxi, Tom Hardy as the Krays in Legend, and Sam Rockwell once again being put to appalling use in Don Verdean. As for catalog titles, Warner Bros., in a pleasant surprise, is putting the Doug and Bob McKenzie comedy/Hamlet adaptation Strange Brew on the main label as opposed to the Archive, plus Kino gives you peak James Woods grittiness in the cop-thriller, uh, Cop, and Grindhouse Releasing releases the Italian slasher film Pieces, which, as so memorably stated on its poster, is “exactly what you think it is”.
