Now this is a big week for home video! If you can’t find anything to like this week, then I genuinely don’t know what to tell you. We get another Oscar contender on Blu-Ray this week, in this case Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight, which you can watch at home and become as confused about the complaints about how bland it looks as I am. And Disney releases Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur this week, which cannot say that its look was the source of many complaints after people saw it. But the catalog titles are where this week shines. The Warner Archive Collection puts out two classic Bogie-Bacall noirs, The Big Sleep (featuring the version with more scenes between the two and the original cut) and Key Largo, Kino Lorber brings Eric Rohmer’s Pauline at the Beach (with typically lovely work from Nestor Almendros) and Fritz Lang’s Spies and Woman in the Moon to U.S. Blu-Ray, Shout Factory gives the late Wes Craven’s Serpent and the Rainbow a good spit-polish, Arrow dregs up three barely-seen American horror films (including the first film shot by Dean Cundey), Synapse Films restores Dario Argento’s Tenebrae to its former glory, VCI releases that family classic from A Christmas Story director Bob Clark Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things, and Criterion shines a light on the Italian drama I Knew Her Well while finally giving Mike Nichols’ The Graduate the definitive Blu-Ray release (with Soderberghian goodness in the form of the commentary with him and Nichols). I’m sure plastics are involved at some point during the Blu-Ray-making process.
