As is expected at the end of a month, his is a light week in terms of quantity, but damned if it isn’t a terrific week in terms of quality. The highlights of this week are Criterion’s two releases, an upgrade of Robert Bresson’s Au hasard Balthazar and their 4K remastering of Midnight Cowboy. Meanwhile, Cohen has taken one of their former titles, Claude Berri’s The Two of Us, and given it their own 4K spit-shine. And Vinegar Syndrome is doing its own thing with a 4K restoration of Melvin Van Peebles’ infamous Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song. As for new releases, there’s barely anything, but what there is is Alex Garland’s Annihilation, his quite effective, gorgeous follow-up to Ex Machina, and The Road Movie, a compilation of Russian dashcam footage that sounds like an absolute must-watch.
