Art is loaded with nudity and controversy. With art comes censorship.
Jess Irish’s film The Phantasmagoria of Offense is a very brief overview of art censorship surrounding the male nude, from Priapus through Mapplethorpe. In 6 minutes, she draws connections to homophobia, fear of the male nude, religion and power. Obviously, Jess isn’t interested in being thorough so much as creating a feeling of power and dread.
