Everybody, grab your shakers, and pour a good night (or wake up) martini, because Turner Classic Movies is running the first three films of The Thin Man movies at 6:15am Eastern (3:15am Pacific) on Tuesday morning or Monday night, depending on your sleep and party patterns. Be warned: if you’re pouring a martini at 3:30am, be prepared for a mysterious character with a snubnose revolver to pay you a visit, asking for your ace investigative skills, and they may not be taking no for an answer if you catch my drift. No worries, because you can always get your martini to go.
The Thin Man, based on the pulp master Dashiell Hammett’s final published novel, follows the semi-newly retired private eye Nick Charles and his wealthy socialite wife, Nora as he gets pulled into one more case involving the disappearance of his old friend. In the film, the mystery is almost besides the point, as William Powell and Myrna Loy devour their roles, and relish in the throw off one liners that so defined the noir series. Come for the mystery, stay for the characters.
The true success of The Thin Man is seen in modern neo noirs like The Big Lebowski and Inherent Vice, as the plot and the personality duke it out for screen time. At times, the mystery is all but forgotten, relishing in the boozy behaviors of its wealthy New York denizens at Christmas time. Interestingly, The Thin Man was filmed in the midst of the worst parts of The Great Depression, depicting a working class detective who hooked up with a wealthy woman and is partying it up as financial worries plague the working class.
Even though The Thin Man was Hammett’s final novel, and never had a sequel by Hammett, it spawned five more movies starring Nick and Nora Charles.
Special note: TCM screwed up on its website, and on the DVR schedule, as it placed a short starting 1 minute after The Thin Man starts. Set them with care.
