The Good Dinosaur presents a coming of age tale filled with tragedy and danger. The littlest dinosaur is a scared animal in a working farmer’s family that has to confront his own fears on his own in the wild. Generally referred to as a Bildungsroman (don’t the German’s have the best words?), this genre focuses on the sensitive central character who has to learn how to live through his experiences.
The Apu Trilogy a;sp presents a Bildungsroman. Released from 1955 – 1959, The Apu Trilogy cinematically lies somewhere between the post-war neorealist movement and the French New Wave. Presenting a tragic coming of age tale over three movies, The Apu Trilogy put India’s film industry on the map.
Over the course of three films, the titular Apu faces three stages of growth: as a young boy, as an adolescent, and as a young adult. Each film has its own sense of space and time, presenting each era with its own distinct sensibility. And, yet, taken as a whole they speak to a singularity of life. The Apu Trilogy was restored this year, and released as part of the Criterion collection.
The Apu Trilogy airs tonight in its entirety on Turner Classic Movies.
