Last night, I went out of my way to make sure our cat was inside for the night, because—despite his best wishes—he is an Indoor Cat. It’s part of being a responsible pet owner. We keep him in because of his desperate desire to kill birds. So even though we don’t actually see who owns them in the current cartoon, they’re not responsible pet owners; having a pet door is fine, I guess, given we didn’t then know the problems with indoor-outdoor cats. But the gate doesn’t lock, so not only can Figaro—presumably capable of jumping the fence—come and go through the area at will, but so can Pluto.
Anyway, whatever he’s been doing, Pluto is back now. Figaro has presumably been sleeping all night like a good kitten, and Pluto has been out in the night. Pluto now wants to sleep, and Figaro wants to play. Pluto wanders the house, whoever’s house it is, trying to get a chance, and Figaro follows him around, trying to keep him awake. Pluto is also followed by a sandman that I’ve always kind of taken to be something of a Chinese caricature for some reason.
Seriously, what has Pluto been doing all night? His eyes aren’t bloodshoot, to be fair, so it doesn’t quite look like he’s been drinking and drugging, but it kind of does? I don’t know. Maybe out womanizing; I suppose that’s possible. (Insert your own pun here, I suppose.) Honestly, I’m not entirely sure what a normal dog would be doing out all night in suburbia, though I’m quite sure it wouldn’t be good for anyone. And this is without even getting into conversations like “has Pluto been fixed?”
Dogs, as it happens, are diurnal—this means they, like humans, are generally awake during the day and asleep at night. Though dogs are also more inclined than humans toward naps. Cats are polyphasic, meaning they sleep, you know, when they feel like it. A lot—the average adult cat sleeps eighteen hours a day—but some at night and some during the day. However, it’s much more likely that Figaro would be trying to fall asleep at dawn than Pluto.
I mean, I’d still rather be watching this than an early ‘30s cartoon. There’s a reason I only chose one option for Year of the Month this month. This particular short just happened to be next up on the Disney cartoon video I’ve been working my way through on YouTube; it wouldn’t surprise me if we get another Pluto after this. At least there’s something happening here, if nothing else.
