I knew it. I knew that the minute I had positive words to say about a DC project, they would fuck that up. I knew that believing an unsubstantiated rumor about a superhero movie for the first time would mean that it turned out to be not true. I knew all that. And yet, I, like much of society, just wanted to believe in something, and that something was Hoyte van Hoytema shooting Wonder Woman.
In my last post, I said that Hoytema (who’s been on a roll since maybe 2008 or so) would be shooting Patty Jenkins’ upcoming Wonder Woman movie. Admittedly, the sources for this info were a bit sketchy, but given one of the sources’ impeccable track record with guessing DC developments, I just took it to be fact. I even promised to not mock DC’s future films as reward for hiring such top-shelf talent to shoot the film. But this afternoon, The Playlist took a pin to the story. They reached the best source to confirm/deny this news, Hoytema himself, and he had some key words on the subject;
“I have nothing to do with that movie”
Not since “I don’t see a lot of money here” have eight words stung so badly. It’s now unknown who exactly will shoot Wonder Woman, but if I may address DC directly once again, I have suggestions. How about Darius Khondji, who could certainly make Wonder Woman/Diana’s Amazon home look as lush and beautiful as anything out there? Maybe get Roger Deakins, because he’s Roger Deakins. Or maybe there’s Christopher Doyle. Sure, Doyle probably regards superhero movies with even more contempt than he’s mustered for Life of Pi and The Departed, but all they need to do is tie a bottle of bourbon to a fishing line, put it outside his house, and reel it into the Warner Bros. studio, and they’ve got him.
