Tired of George Lucas’s version of space history? Well according to comicbook.com, Disney may have plans to release the original, unaltered-but-hopefully-restored, versions of the first three Star Wars movies (or second three or whatever it is) on Blu-ray.
Now does this mean that Disney has struck some sort of deal with Fox, who owns the distribution rights to at least the first movie? Possibly. Both companies stand to gain quite a bit of money from this, as it’s wanted in over five systems (I’m confident that I botched that line). What I want to know is this – what will George Lucas say now that we can see in HD glory Greedo shooting first? Will he use a Jedi mind trick and convince us that these are not the versions we want to see? Who knows.
If this happens I’ll be happy. These versions also appeared as non-anamorphic bonus features on the Special Edition DVD’s a few years back and I watched them back to back with the remastered version to compare. In a completely non-fanboy way, I much prefer the original versions mostly because they actually feel like movies from the late 70’s and early 80’s, and I love that era of sci-fi/space opera. So I’ve got my fingers crossed.
