It is with great sadness to announce that Channel 4 has cancelled Utopia. For those who are unfamiliar with the British series, Utopia was a British sci-fi conspiracy that ran for two series in 2013-14. A group of graphic novel aficionados become part of a deadly mystery when clues are found in the long-fabeled second manuscript of a cult graphic novel, The Utopia Experiment.
Utopia was my choice for Best TV Drama of 2013 and 2014, and some of the best TV I’ve seen, period. It’s fantastic imagination, coupled with great acting, great performances, taut, clever writing, and a truly unique visual style, will be sorely missed. The second series opener, a 70s prequel episode, is the best episode of television I’ve seen all year.
However, for an esoteric sci-fi conspiracy thriller, the fact we got two series was great in and of itself.
I can’t wait to rewatch the whole series soon. Expect Series 1 and 2 recaps and reviews in the coming weeks.
