New on DVD and Blu-Ray

After last week’s very strong showing, this week may keep up the quantity, but it can’t keep up the quality. The big title this week for me is Andrew Haigh’s 45 Years, which is sadly not getting released by Criterion (considering their history with both Haigh and IFC Films), but that shouldn’t dissuade you from checking it out, because it is fantastic, very quietly engrossing, and home to a Charlotte Rampling performance that I think probably deserved the Oscar this year (although it’s a bigger shame about what she said before not winning the Oscar than it is about the actual losing of the Oscar). There’s also 10 Cloverland Lane, unseen by me but apparently the bee’s knees, plus Michael Showalter’s apparently winning Hello, My Name is Doris, and then some rather uninspiring new titles (I apologize to any Eddie the Eagle-philes reading this). Catalog titles include Criterion releasing Jean Renoir’s early-sound classic La chienne (the inspiration for Fritz Lang’s Scarlet Street) and the classic comedy Here Comes Mr. Jordan, Kino releasing the actual Fritz Lang film Dr. Mabuse, The Gambler, Arrow putting out another collection of forgotten gems from Nikkatsu, the Cohen Film Collection bringing more of Maurice Pialat’s work to the U.S., and Twilight Time taunting you to give in and support them, and then stuff that maybe somebody was hollering for, including the Jaws sequels (hey, one of them was alright), the complete Airport series, whatever the fuck Black Dog is, and Jeepers Creepers I and II, the movies made by a convicted child molester that I can’t imagine too many people are coming to the defense of.
