This week, we have a light week in terms of quantity and quality, but there’s some goodies to be had. Criterion upgrades Vittorio De Sica’s masterpiece Bicycle Thieves to Blu-Ray this week, in addition to giving a long-overdue home video release to Les Blank’s long-buried Leon Russell documentary A Poem is a Naked Person, an essential purchase for all who loved their Blank set from a little over a year ago. Quentin Tarantino’s scathing western The Hateful Eight can now be seen on a screen that’s probably small enough to give Tarantino a coronary, although unfortunately the Blu-Ray is near bare-bones in terms of extras and only offers the cut-down general release version. Shout Factory is finally releasing the director’s cut of that other cut-down Michael Cimino film, The Sicilian, in addition to everybody’s second-favorite Chuck Barris film, The Gong Show Movie. Or, if, like me, you’re an extreme athlete, you may want to purchase the remake of Point Break, where any color besides cyan is a distant memory.
