We’re finally back to a healthy slate of releases, though the major studios are still asleep (they only offer the latest film from Eli “Please Don’t Check My Instagram Feed” Roth). Criterion has a 4K of Trainspotting and a home-video release of any kind for Dee Rees’ Mudbound, the Warner Archive Collection runs the gamut from Marx brothers to animated Rodney Dangerfield dogs, and Vinegar Syndrome off-shoots put out bells-and-whistles Blu-Rays of John Dahl’s Red Rock West and Alex Ross Perry’s Queen of Earth. Special note to one of Arrow’s titles this week (the other is 4Ks of the Arnold Schwarzenegger Conans), Peter Yates’ little-seen Murphy’s War, where Peter O’Toole drags out the final days of World War II with thrilling, snail-pace air and sea chases. It’s not quite enough to earn lost-classic status, but it has the most creative use of a torpedo in cinematic history and that’s maybe worth more.
