New on DVD and Blu-Ray

The “big” release this week is The Flash, the source of the Beowulf Ron Livingston and Maribel Verdu seen in the header. I don’t want to talk more about it except to reiterate that it’s one of the ugliest pieces of shit and it did more than all the crimes to make me hate the sight of Ezra Miller. It means nothing to say that the rest of this week’s slate is an improvement on The Flash (that includes the 4K of Staying Alive), but there’s good stuff to be had, like the first Little Women movie and the fourth thru seventh Chucky movies. I want to give a special shout-out to Nobody’s Fool, not the Paul Newman or Tiffany Haddish one but a lovely, funny romance with a stunning Rosanna Arquette performance at the center. It views small-town and theatre-troupe eccentricities with the warmth of the Jonathan Demme comedies of this period, creating a vibrant world where Arquette can maybe shed her debilitating neuroses and sadness; she reads a Romeo & Juliet soliloquy in one scene and makes you believe that everything will work out for Juliet, let alone her.
