New on DVD and Blu-Ray

The Safdie brothers and their cohorts provide this week’s two most enticing releases, Criterions of the Safdies’ Daddy Longlegs (where the usual Safdie fuck-up is trusted with small children) and Ronald Bronstein’s Frownland (unseen but praised as being a step beyond even the most stressful Safdies movie). There’s a lot else but mostly I’m interested in Sony’s black-and-white reissue of famed cyberpunk bomb Johnny Mnmeonic, which isn’t the (bizarre) studio cash-grab it may seem, but instead director Robert Longo’s way of, as he explains it, making it look like a “shitty, million-dollar movie”, closer to Alphaville than The Matrix.
